The Real Reason Why You Can't Get Anything Done: Too Many Open Tabs!!!
By: Eboni Batie
Do you suffer from procrastination? Or are you a person who has phenomenal ideas but can’t seem to get any of them off the ground?
Or maybe you’re like me… and you start one project, only to leave it unfinished to write a business plan, only to leave that unfinished - then you decide you’ll just try and work your way up at the job you currently have, only to come home feeling drained and realize that you need to revert back to your business plan.
If this sounds like you, then you may have too many “open tabs”.
Before I get down and dirty, let me explain what tabs are and what they aren't.
Imagine sitting at your work computer or personal lap top right now and you are browsing the internet. You start off searching one thing, only to open another tab to look at something else. In fact, I’m sure many of us currently have a number of tabs open on our search engines, many of which we may not have looked at in the past couple of days… but they remain open.
Or imagine being focused on one tab, but then all the sudden an ad pops up and your attention wanders over and you open a new tab briefly... but even that brief moment takes away your focus from your original task. Now that you have grasped the concept, apply this to real life... we are constantly shifting our focus from one thing to the next without completing or finishing the very thing that we set out to do initially.
THIS IS HAPPENING ALL DAY/EVERY DAY IN OUR DAILY LIVES! Can you say, brain overload?
Tabs are much more than neglected new years resolutions. They are more consuming and can cause you to lose sight of what you truly care about. New years resolutions are typically less overwhelming than tabs (in my opinion - but technically this is all my opinion, but you get the point).
Are you following? Ok, good... Let's talk about why we should close tabs in 2020 and beyond:
1. SAVING YOUR SANITY. No, but seriously. Having too many tabs open can truly cause you to feel overwhelmed - to crash - and to feel exhausted. With the rise of social media, it seems impossible to not feel like you have to care about EVERYTHING. From what celebrities are 'beefing' with each other, who had a baby by who, climate change, losing weight, police brutality, coronavirus, conspiracy theories, posting all your fun moments (or it didn't happen), the world of politics, drinking 8 glasses of water a day, plotting ways to quit your 9-5 and being an entrepreneur...I could go on and on. Losing your sanity already just reading that huh? I feel your pain.
2. YOU WON’T FULLY COMPLETE ANY TASK IF YOU HAVE TOO MANY OPEN. Which in a way is like failed new years resolutions, but it's deeper than that. So many success stories involve a common theme. Those folks found something they loved or were good at, and focused on it. Yes, there are always going to be distractions here and there, but these folks truly became masters in their craft. Whether it be sports (Kobe Bryant) tech (Mark Zuckerberg), climate change (Greta Thunberg), business (Jeff Bezos), etc...they were all laser-focused on one thing. The more energy you divide between multiple projects, the less time and attention you have to give to something that you actually could accomplish.
3. SOME TABS HAVE SUB-TABS. Think of this as one of the many goals we have set for ourselves that has many more action items, which requires A LOT of effort and energy. For example, if one of your main goals is losing weight... that may require going to the gym (time/energy/dedication), eating healthier - which involves choosing healthier options, or cooking more at home (time, energy, effort), reading labels to reduce your sugar intake (time, energy, effort)... you get where I'm going with this?
Time, energy, and effort are required to really fulfill our goals/dreams. Things inevitably fall short when you try to prioritize too much at once. Take the time to take some time! FOCUS.
If you're still wondering what you should take away from this, i'll sum it up for you. CLOSE SOME TABS! Free ya mind. Keep only 2-3 tabs open and focus on that. You'll truly be amazed at what you can accomplish when you aren't worried about everyone and everything.
Trust me when I say, everyone and everything ain’t worried about you, so you can afford to focus on your goals and yourself!
